Twice during the 2012 New York Yard season teams will have matchups according to their position in the standings. This Position Week, the top 4 teams in the league will face each other in an intense mid-season playoff atmosphere. The results of this week will surely set the tone for the final two weeks of regular season play.
Game to Watch – Round 1 Mob (9-3) vs. Rampage (9-3)
This is a matchup of the two most chatted about teams in New York. The Mob has seemingly raked everyone off the field with their loud cracks of the ball with their natural yellow bats. With a team batting avg. of .407 and over 29 home runs slugged as a team, the Mob is taking names and putting out ‘hits’ on the league. Rookie Matt Ranuado is slugging over a thousand (1.180) and is tied for the league lead in Home Runs with the Rampage’s own Kevin Engasser.
The 3rd place Rampage matchup almost equally to the 4th place Mob. The Rampage also hold a +.400 team avg. (.411) and have a sub three ERA (2.66). Rookie Bryan Morris is 3-0, tied for the team lead in wins, and holds a 0.57 ERA in 14 innings of work. Fast Pitch teammates DeGiovine and Engasser are batting .478 and .474 respectively. They will look to carry team Rampage to an important opening round sweep of the Mob.
Game to watch – Round 2 Hammerheads (8-4) vs. Playaz (4-8)
A rematch of last seasons’ final step ladder playoff game pins the Hammerheads and Playaz against each other once again. Both teams enter this matchup looking much different than 2011. The Hammerheads parted ways with Mob members Phil Zoppi and Jeff Evans, replacing them with Yard rookie JP Philogene. JP is tied for the league lead in doubles (4) and is batting a cool .313 on the young season.
The Playaz also parted ways with a current Mob member, Mike Aponte. Rookie Drue Santora has turned many heads this season with his team leading .340 avg and 7 home runs. He has also been a surprise on the mound providing some much needed pitching depth to a shallow Playaz rotation. The Playaz could easily be 5-7 or 6-6 if a couple of bounces had gone their way. The Hammerheads and Playaz split their Week 1 matchup with each team throwing a 3-0 shutout.
Game to Watch – Round 3 Enemy (10-2) vs. Rampage (9-3)
The Rampage are featured twice for this reason; they play the Enemy again Week4. This is a chance for both teams to solidify themselves at the top of the standings. The Enemy are a ho-hum 10-2 and have yet to play at full strength this season. They have yet to play with Joe Purcell who has missed the first two weeks due to school and work. Kevin Norris is batting a boring .556 with 9 home runs and 41 RBIs.
The Rampage will need to put it into 5th gear if they want to steal a sweep from the Enemy. The double dip is the final of three tough matchups in line for team Rampage as well as the rest of the GSWL New York Yard League.
