The first round of the tournament featured some pretty fascinating matchups.  At the bottom of the A bracket we had a battle between the previous two National Players’ Cup champions in the Playaz and State of Mind.  SOM would win the match 3-2 and move on to a second round matchup against the Hammerheads, who defeated the Bandits (formerly SOM 2.0) 1-0.  Rounding out Bracket A we had the defending Regional Champs the Enemy taking on the Screwballs.  This is a great matchup because these guys have played against each other for a decade.  The Screwballs have seen the Enemy grow from teenage wiffle prodigies, and develop into Hall of Fame wifflers.  The Enemy would emerge victorious once again over their Screwy foes 5-0.  Waiting for them in the 2nd round were their fellow Connecticut state wifflers in the Fairfield Fire.  Another classic matchup of hometown foes sees the Enemy emerge 1-0 in extra innings.

In Bracket B the prime time first round matchup was NY Inc. taking on the Throwbacks.  A couple of teams that worked out and practiced extensively together over the winter so there was plenty of familiarity between these two squads.  NY Inc. defeated the Throwbacks 2-1 and set up a 2nd round matchup with the eventual champions Freaky Franchise.  Inc. would win this matchup 8-0 but Freaky would have their revenge later in the semifinals.  At the bottom of the B bracket the Swingmen and the Dragons would win their first round matchups against the Dark Knights and Titans respectively and face off in the 2nd round.  Another classic matchup between rivals who did a lot of work to remodel their rosters this off season.  The Swingmen would triumph over the Dragons 3-1 and advance to the Quarterfinals.

Both the Screwballs and the Playaz were favored to advance out of the first round of the Losers bracket but only the Screwballs held up their end of the bargain.  The Playaz were no-hit by Sean McRae of the Bandits even though the Playaz only had one strikeout as a team.  The Screwballs defeated the Widows 4-1 and would face the Hammerheads, who lost to State of Mind 1-0.  The Screwballs would then defeat the Hammerheads 1-0.  The Bandits would take on the Fairfield Fire in their second round loser’s bracket matchup.  The bandits defeated the kids from Connecticut 6-3 and then defeated the Screwballs 5-1 to advance to the Losers A Quarterfinals.

In the B loser’s bracket the Throwbacks and the Titans defeated the NY Governors and the Dark Knights respectively, advancing to the second round.  The Throwbacks would then face the Dragons, who lost their second round matchup with the Swingmen 3-1.  The Dragons were then eliminated from the bracket by the Throwbacks 1-0.  In the other matchup, the Titans would emerge victorious over the Dark Knights in a battle that featured some of the better young talent that wiffle ball has to offer.  The Titans would fall in the next round to Freaky after they were defeated 8-0 by NY Inc. in the second round.  With that, Freaky and the Throwbacks would face off for a chance to enter the quarterfinals.  The Throwbacks would lose to the Franchise 2-0.

Stay tuned for further break down of Week 1 in Yard.
