Player's Cup Champions - The Rookies

Each year at Nationals, there is a place for those ejected from the bracket.  Rather than go home, teams eliminated before the tournament's quarter finals fall to Golden Stick's Player's Cup for "A Second Chance At National Glory."  Yesterday, Connecticut's Rookies team found just that, beating NY's Usual Suspects in an extra inning final.

Congrats to team Captain, Josh Pagano who took home the division's MVP Award , Evan Lazur, and Jordan Robles for going home wet and with hardware in tow!

2018 National Championships

It's that time of year again!  And, this one will sure be a doozie!  We're approaching the 2018 Golden Stick National Championships, The OPEN in Staten Island scheduled for next weekend, August 25 & 26.

Enclosed are the top 16 national rankings following the 2018 Golden Stick WIFFLE® season, the Super Sixteen Bracket, complete format for Nationals, and more.

The Super 16 Bracket is known as the National Championship Bracket (NCB).  It is populated by the Country's top 16 teams at the conclusion of the season's regional play.  The remainder of the Nation's teams enter Nationals via the Pool Play Preliminary Rounds.  Teams dropping from the Super 16 Bracket's 1st two rounds will fall to Pool Play trying to advance through the event's middle rounds to compete for a National Title on Sunday.

Amidst the brackets, the rounds, the tie breakers, run differentials, dropped pop flies, insane plays, and the many things that will blur our eyes on the field this coming weekend, all you really need to know is that; The OPEN features over 20 of the Country's best WIFFLE® Ball teams and the winner will be your 2018 National Champion!

Teams are ranked by:
A. Regional Champions
B. Super Qualifier (SQ) winners
C. Points earned by winning throughout the season

Game Not Over

It seems like just a few years ago that Anthony “Young Money” Pucci was running train on Mike Mormando’s Philly Region, Jimmy Flynn was flopping around MA trying to prove he was worth a spot on a legitimate roster, and Daniel Haverty was still absorbing the pitches he learned in Golden Stick’s Youth WIFFLE® Camp.

Yesterday, they skipped up 7th Floor Crew’s staircase and won GSWL MA Regional Championships!

In a day of torrential rain, in which league President Lou Levesque admitted, rain rolling off his nose, “I got this wrong.  We should have called this,” Mass team Game Over got it right sweeping a MA juggernaut after besting Lou's Diamonds & the Raiders.

While things weren’t always in synch for this 1st year franchise, they seemed to be on point when it mattered.  Winning the largest NY Region event of the year, and the 17th Annual MA Region Title are two mighty legs on which this National Championship stool looks to lean going into Staten Island.

Also of note on the day is that Eric Lessard’s Plastico Quemado advanced to the Region’s Comeback Cup Championship, where they’ll face Scott Thomas’ Yum Yums.  The bracket was suspended due to playing conditions and will be resumed sometime after the OPEN.  The pairing came way of PQ beating Lou’s Diamonds yesterday, but also notably taking down Game Over in the last MA Regional event 9-0 a week ago.  Is the addition of 14 year old Dougie Baker a sign that PQ found the stairs out of the basement?  We’ll see what 2019 has to offer.

So, as they say 'round these parts..."We're on to Staten Island."

Familiar Enemy Territory

In the second MA Event of a season, plagued by weather related permit pulls, the Mass region saw a three team influx of New York talent.  Making the trip from the Long Island headquarters were NY W Inc. featuring Anthony Didio flying in from CO, a two man Playaz squad (D'Auria & Rapacki), and the one and only NY Enemy.

Kevin Norris & Ty Wegrzyn battled through moderate temps, including spikes of heat, and even some hurling of more than just WIFFLE® Balls to take out MA tyrant, 7th Floor Crew in a 9-7 game to end the event.

It was a great event and a precursor to this coming weekend where both the NY & MA regions will holding SQ's.
