Enemy vs. State of Mind
State of Mind vs. Bandits
NY Inc. vs. Swingmen
Swingmen vs. Freaky

The Enemy and State of Mind battled for a spot in the semifinals.  A classic matchup of two of the top teams in the New York Region with the loser having to face the Bandits and having to win in order to advance to the semifinals.  The Enemy defeated SOM 9-0 and would await the winner of the SOM/Bandits loser bracket finals matchup.  The Bandits led early, but SOM was too much behind two home runs from Matt Ventimiglia and a homer from Danny Lanigan as they defeated the Bandits 6-5, setting up a rematch with the Enemy in the Semifinals.

On the B side of the bracket the Swingmen battled NY Inc. for a BYE and a spot in the Semifinals.  NY Inc. would defeat the Swingmen 1-0 and secure their spot in the Semis while the Swingmen would have to defeat Freaky Franchise to have their rematch with NY Inc.  Freaky had been battle tested all day, surviving back to back elimination games to make it to the Losers’ bracket finals against the Swingmen.  With momentum on their side, Freaky defeated the Swingmen 5-2 to advance to the semifinals, and a rematch with NY Inc.

Enemy vs. State of Mind
Freaky vs. NY Inc.

Each of the semifinal matchups turned out to be rematches from matchups earlier in the tournament.  For SOM however, they had to face the Enemy for the second time in three games.  After losing the previous matchup 9-0 and having to start their Ace Ventimiglia just to make it to the Semis, nobody gave them a chance, including themselves.  At the beginning of the tournament SOM member Jay Vantresca uttered these all important words; “You just gotta win.  It doesn’t matter the format, the schedule, the opponent.  You just gotta win”.  Well he took those words and took the mound against the Enemy in the Semifinals and his performance did not disappoint.  SOM went on to defeat the Enemy 10-5 and secured a spot in the finals.

SOM would await the winner of Freaky vs. NY Inc.  In another rematch of an earlier blowout loss, the guys from Freaky looked to avenge their second round embarrassment to the Inc.  Freaky was hot coming into this matchup having now won three straight elimination games.  Behind the free agent arm of Phil Fresiello and a solo shot from Ryan Bush, the Franchise defeated NY Inc. 1-0 and would face State of Mind in the finals.

State of Mind vs. Freaky Franchise

This is what the double elimination format is all about.  Two teams that suffered losses during the day but persevered and made it to the championship game and a guaranteed pay day.  The championship game was 5 innings and featured Eric Rosenberg of the Franchise and Danny Lanigan of SOM as the starters.  Both guys would not finish the game and leave it their bullpen to get them to the end.  The game was highlighted by a litany of great fielding plays, most notably two sick catches from Phil Fresiello of the Franchise.  He robbed a homerun by leaping against the fence and bringing one back into the yard, and also had a sick diving catch in left field.  Fresiello then took the mound and shut the door for the save and locked up Freaky Franchise’s first title of the 2015 Yard season.  Bush led the way for the franchise falling a single short of the cycle while driving in five of their six runs.
