It was a beautiful day for wiffs on Long Island yesterday and much of the Northeast corridor. Overall, over 40 teams took to the field in a Golden Stick sanctioned tournament all over the country yesterday. On Long Island, 16 teams from all over the New York Metro area stormed the fields of Eisenhower Park to battle for league points, cash prizes, wiffle bragging rights. It was also the debut of the new 2015 GSWL Yard League Double Elimination format which proved to be a huge success based on the reactions of many members of the league as well as the couple of new squads that came down.
The format was smooth. Teams did very little waiting around and matchups were clearly set via the bracket setup. While there is a need for a couple tweaks the format was an overall success. Out of 16 teams, 10 walked away with at least their money back after a long day of wiffs. The winners, Freaky Franchise, walked away with the Week 1 title and $350 in cash. 12 teams participated in "exit game" for $50 and the second place team SOM also won $50. Third pace game was for $100.
As for the champs, the boys of the Franchise played an exceptional tournament. Although the guys of SOM did them a favor a defeating the Enemy in the semifinals, that should in no way take away from the outstanding fielding of Phil Fresiello, who made a couple of ridiculous catches in the finals, or the great and timely hitting from Ryan Bush and Erik Rosenberg.
Stats are being calculated, videos are being edited, and articles are being written. Stay tuned for all the breakdown from Week 1 in wiffs.
