2015 Yard Preview: NY Throwbacks

The Throwbacks had a great season in 2015 with multiple victories against the top flight teams that others seemed to always falter against.  Wins against both the Enemy and 10 Run Rule in the same season is a feat not many teams can claim for themselves.  However, regular season successes did not translate into post season victories for the Throwbacks.  An otherwise tepid performance at the OPEN left the organization with lots of questions, one of them being how to replace unrestricted free agent Frank Kollias.

Kollias made the tough choice to leave longtime neighborhood friends Dan O’Connell and John Denaro to join the rival Hammerheads.  Last season Kollias slashed .368/.457/.616 with 10 home runs and 39 RBIs.  He also was a finalist for the Golden Palm award which is given to the player who demonstrates the nastiest fielding plays all season.  The Throwbacks scoured the free agent class of 2015 looking for a viable replacement for Kollias, but would they really find someone who was just as good, and looks strikingly similar to actor George Clooney?

Well, they didn’t.  TBacks owner John Denaro decided to stick with a three man lineup and secure both Gerard Fitzgerald and Danny “D'octor” O’Connell for the 2015 season.  Three man lineups have been the norm throughout most of Wiffle history.  A three man lineup also secures more at bats for Fitzgerald, who is arguably one of the better hitters in GSWL.  Last season Fitzgerald slashed .449/.527/.982  and accumulated a whopping 101 hits on the season.  Fitzgerald also hit 32 homeruns, six more than the rest of the Throwbacks combined 2014 totals.  However, a shallow pitching rotation of JD and DOC might spell disaster for the Tbacks late in tournaments and late in the season.  Their fielding is good and their hitting is better, but the Tbacks will have to play at an elite level if they want to finish in the top half of the standings.

Projected Lineup: Gerard, DOC, JD
